Black Lives Matter

About a week ago a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest went right by our house and the people in the march ended up stopping for a water break and said a few words just houses away from us. My son had created his own ‘BLm’ sign on his own accord after hearing what was going on in the world and it was hanging in our front window so when we heard the marchers coming we grabbed his sign and the two of us ran out to our front porch to show our support for the protestors as they passed by.

Some of the protestors waved to us when they saw our sign, others motioned for us to come and join in the march. Ultimately we just stayed where we were on our front porch, not because we don’t support their cause, because we do, but because where we needed to be at the moment seemed to be the place we were right then – us watching them, listening to and really hearing what they had to say.

I did this piece on wood for my friends’ Tahoe home. It shows them skiing and walking on the trails (their favorite things to do) in the Tahoe area.

Art Teacher

Here is a mixed media piece I made this month of my high school art teacher circa 1988. Below is the original pen and ink drawing I based it off of. I’m submitting them both to an All School Alumni-Student Art Show happening in early August. This teacher is still there! Do you think he’ll be surprised?

National Parks 2019

I love being in the beauty of nature and visiting state and national parks. In June I visited Joshua Tree and the Grand Canyon National Parks which were both breathtaking. I sat at the rim of the canyon and sketched a rough pencil sketch of the canyon. On my return home I colored and painted it and did one of Joshua Tree National Park as well. (see below)

Two years prior I had visited the Grand Tetons. I did this painting in a different style but I still like how it came out.

What to draw?

Some of my most interesting work comes from when I don’t know what to draw in my sketchbook – which actually happens often. These two pieces are an example of just that.

The one on the left I simply drew my paintbrush then later I felt the painting needed more so I added the paint on the top of the page which helps finalize the piece.

The piece below was the way the watercolor tray and pen were situated on the table in front of me when I was pondering once again what to draw.
